The Calder Memorial Trophy is essentially given to the top rookie in the NHL that season. For the NHL, there are certain rules around eligibility as a player can't play more than 25 games the prior season or six or more games in each of the prior two seasons.
For that reason, players like Alex Turcotte or Brandt Clarke this season would not be eligible to be considered for the Calder Memorial Trophy as both had played six or more games in two preceding seasons.
One of the best players in LA Kings history was last to win Calder Memorial Trophy
It has been a long time since the Los Angeles Kings have had a player win the Calder Memorial Trophy. In fact, it was almost 40 seasons ago as Luc Robitaille was the last, and only player, in Kings history to win the award.
That season, the Kings had two players finish in the Top 3 as Jimmy Carson would finish third in the voting. A few seasons prior to that Larry Murphy would be runner-up for the award in the 1980-81 season.
Robitaille would have a Hall of Fame career that began in Los Angeles where he would play 14 of his 19 seasons in the NHL. As a rookie, Robitaille had 45 goals and 39 assists and would start a stretch of 45 or more goals in his first five seasons and six of his first seven.
He still owns the franchise record in goals scored with 557 and is seven ahead of Marcel Dionne. The closest active player would be Anze Kopitar who has 437 goals in his NHL career with the Kings.
It might be some time before the LA KIngs have a player who could be in contention for that award. However, that could change quickly if someone like Liam Greentree, when he reaches the NHL, makes a push for that trophy.
