The Los Angeles Kings have had five seasons with more than 60 games that has seen them finish with 60 or fewer points. However, those seasons don't compare to the 1993-94 season and that will go down as the worst in franchise history.
The Kings would finish with 66 points that season but the circumstances and the expectations for that season is what makes it the worst. The prior season the Kings had reach the Stanley Cup Final but came up short against the Montreal Canadiens.
In the following season, the Kings still had a talented roster with players like Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille while Barry Melrose was returning for his second season as head coach. The season started well as the Kings would lose only one game in regulation in the first seven games.
However, it was a struggle down the stretch as they would win only eight games in regulation over the final three months.
The Los Angeles Kings struggled on defense while Wayne Gretzky would set an NHL record
It was a tale of two teams essentially with the Kings as they had one of the better offenses and were tied for sixth in goals scored with 294 as Robitaille led the team in goals with 42 with Wayne Gretzky not far behind him with 38, while Gretzky would lead the league in assists (92) and points (130).
This season would also be the one that Wayne Gretzky broke the NHL record for career goals, which was held by Gordie Howe at the time.
However, they struggled to stop anyone on the other end of the ice and the Kings would allow the third-most goals in the NHL that season at 322. That season, Kelly Hruder and Robb Stauber were the primary goalies and they had goals against averages of 3.68 and 3.41 respectively.
It wasn't entirely their fault though as they saw a ridiculous amounts of shots. In fact, the Kings allowed 3,033 shots or an average of 36 shots per game.
In the end, it was a season with high expectations that came nowhere close to delivering on the results.
