Remembering Wayne Gretzky's record-setting season in assists with LA Kings

The list of accomplishments for Wayne Gretzky is seemingly never-ending and the awards, achievements, and records are awe-inspiring. It is understandable why he is called The Great One and fortunately for the Los Angeles Kings, he spent eight seasons of his career with the team.

During his time with the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky was an elite goal-scorer as he led the league in goals in five seasons. As great as he was putting the puck in the net, he was even better at passing and setting up teammates. While he never led the league in goals while with the Kings, he continued to lead the league in assists.

In five of the first six seasons with the Kings, he led the league in this category and in the process set the franchise record for assists. In fact, he is the only player in franchise history with more than 85 assists and he did it each of those seasons.

Wayne Gretzky's best season in terms of assists with the Los Angeles Kings was 1990-91

He would set the franchise record in his first season with the Kings when he had 114 in the 1988-89 season but that record would not stand very long. Two seasons later, Gretzky would surpass that total and finish with 122 in the 1990-91 season, a record that still stands today.

That season he had five games with four or more assists, and it's not that surprising that two of those games came against the team that traded Gretzky away, the Oilers. He also had eight games with three assists but more impressive than that, there were only 11 games all season that he didn't record at least one assist.

While Gretzky does have the Top 5 seasons in terms of assists, he has been passed in franchise history in the category by both Marcel Dionne and Anze Kopitar for career assists. Kopitar currently has the franchise record and will be looking to add to his total this upcoming season.
