This past year, the Los Angeles Kings tied the franchise record for most points in a season with 105. They would tie the 1974-75 team, which reached that mark in two fewer games, and owns the franchise record for points percentage at .656.
The Kings would also win the Stanley Cup twice, but their playoff runs would not be called dominant. The honor for the most dominant team belongs to the only team to win the division. That was during the 1990-91 season as the Kings would go 46-24-10 and finish with 102 points.
In that season, the Kings would have the third-highest point total in the league behind only the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues with 106 and 105 points, respectively. Even with the Kings having the third-highest total, they were pushed for most of the season by the Calgary Flames who finished just behind them with 100 points.
What made this Los Angeles Kings so dominant?
That season, the Kings had a great balance of scoring but also defense, and goaltending. Among the forwards, it was Wayne Gretzky leading the way and would lead the entire league in assists with 122 and points at 163.
However, Luc Robitaille and Tomas Sandstrom were also big parts of that time and had 91 and 89 points and all three would make the All-Star Game that season.
On the other end of the ice, Kelly Hrudey had one of the best seasons of his career and went 26-13-6 and a save percentage of .900 and a goals against average of 2.90.
The balance the team had was evident by the fact that they would finish in the Top 5 in the NHL in goals scored (344) but also fewest goals allowed (254).
In the end, the Kings wouldn't win the Stanley Cup after a very tight series with the Edmonton Oilers. That series included four overtime games, including two reaching double overtime, and the Kings would go 1-3 in those games before losing to the Oilers in six.
Even with the playoff loss, it is hard to take away the accomplishments this team had and they will go down as the most dominant team in LA Kings history.
