Former Los Angeles Kings senior advisor to the general manager Marc Bergevin was mentioned by The Athletic on Thursday as a potential candidate to replace Steve Yzerman as the Detroit Red Wings next general manager hire this offseason.

This opening became one of the league's biggest offseason storylines this summer after Steve Yzerman stepped down as the Red Wings' general manager earlier this week on Wednesday.

Bergevin was hired by former Kings' general manager and vice president Rob Blake to be a senior advisor in January 2022.

After spending parts of five seasons as the Kings senior advisor to the general manager (from 2022-2025), he was hired to be the associate general manager with the Buffalo Sabres in December 2025 under general manager Jarmo Kekalainen.

Bergevin also served as the general manager and executive vice president of the Montreal Canadiens for roughly a decade (from 2012-2021).

Ex-Los Angeles Kings advisor Marc Bergevin brings years of front-office experience to the candidate pool

While his stint with the Kings ended after Blake's departure from Los Angeles in the 2025 offseason, his time with the organization still reinforced their tendency to prioritize experienced hockey executives in the front office. He brought roughly a decade of general manager experience with an Original Six organization to the Kings' front office in the early-to-mid 2020s under Blake's GM regime.

During Bergevin's time in Los Angeles, he helped to oversee a Kings team that made the postseason every year. He was also part of the Kings' front office that drafted and helped to develop top organizational prospects such as goalie Carter George and defenseman Brandt Clarke.

The Red Wings are expected to evaluate several candidates for the general manager opening this offseason, but Bergevin's inclusion on a list like this one from The Athletic highlights how valuable his experience is in NHL circles.

That said, it's still too early to know whether he'll ultimately be on the shortlist of candidates to be interviewed for this job with the Red Wings this offseason.
