The LA Kings played their first season in the NHL during the 1967-68 season and had a great inaugural season that saw them finish second in their division. They would struggle some over the next few years but had an incredible season during the 1974-75 season. It was a record-setting season, a record that still stands today but might not by the end of the season.
That season the Kings would go 42-17-21 and record 105 points, which is the most in franchise history. It would be the first of six seasons in franchise history that they surpassed 100 points and a record that has stood for 50 years.
Can the LA Kings break this team record this season?
Currently, the LA Kings are 42-23-9 and in second place in the Pacific Division. On the season, they have 93 points with a points percentage of .628% and if that points percentage doesn't change, the Kings will finish with 103 points.
That certainly wouldn't be enough to break the record however in five of the final eight games this regular season they will be playing at home in Crypto.com Arena. The Kings are the best team at home in the entire NHL and has a points percentage of .833%.
If that percentage holds true, the Kings can secure eight points which means they would need to win two of their final three road games to tie the franchise record of 105 points. The team from the 70s would still have the franchise record in points percentage because that season they played only 80 regular season games while this team gets two extra games in the regular season.
While the record has been around for half of a century, this is not the first time in recent memory the LA Kings have challenged breaking it. During the 2022-23 season, the Kings would come up one point short of tying it with 104 on the season.
Considering how the Kings have played, especially at home, there is a good chance they could at least tie it with wins in six of their final eight games. If they can one more win, or get an overtime loss, they will own the record outright.
