In this past regular season, Hicketts was in the mix among the players competing to earn an NHL role on the blue line in training camp last fall. Hicketts, Kyle Burroughs, and Jacob Moverare competed for the spot as the seventh defenseman for the Kings this past fall.
Hicketts was in the mix on the training camp roster pretty late in the fall for the Kings last year before he was ultimately waived and assigned to the Reign in the AHL. He was on the outside looking in for the final group in the last week of the preseason last fall.
The Kings have a lot of young depth and competition on the blue line entering training camp this fall. With young defenseman Angus Booth pushing for an NHL opportunity and other depth players, like Erik Gustafsson and Scott Perunovich, competing for the seventh spot on the blue line, a lot would have to go wrong ahead of him on the depth chart for him to get sustained NHL minutes this upcoming regular season.
Hicketts gives the Kings an experienced option on the blue line to call upon when injuries pile up, but there isn't an obvious path to a consistent NHL role for the veteran defenseman in training camp.
