Head coach Jim Hiller and the Los Angeles Kings will begin the first phase of training camp in rookie camp for the 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff in roughly 24 hours on Sep. 10 with the first practice. This will be the first test for some younger Kings players who are looking to make an impression on the coaching staff going into training camp and the preseason this fall in rookie camp and mini camp later this month.

Training camp and the preseason begin for the Los Angeles Kings before the preseason opener against in-state rival Anaheim on Sep. 21

A little under two weeks after players report for rookie camp and the Golden State Rookie Faceoff later this week, all NHL players will report for training camp and practice ahead of the preseason for LA.

This preseason will be an opportunity for some of the top Kings' prospects among the younger players to make their case to be on the opening-night roster for Hiller and LA this upcoming season in the Pacific Division.

Liam Greentree leads the team in goal scoring in the preseason

The Kings' top rated overall prospect, forward Liam Greentree, is expected to be a full participant for LA in training camp and rookie camp this fall. We wrote about a piece on the site earlier this week discussing a report that talked about Greentree's rehab going "extremely well" this summer.

He posted four goals and one assist, including one power play and one shorthanded goal, in the Spitfires' convincing 7-3 win in the preseason this past weekend on Sep. 7. Greentree has looked fantastic for the Spitfires in training camp and the OHL preseason in Windsor over the past week or so.

Greentree is primed for a big training camp and preseason for the Kings. If he looks as great as he did offensively last season for the Spitfires in the OHL, scoring a career-high 49 goals and 119 total points, Greentree will be a big scoring threat around the net for the Kings going into training camp and this upcoming preseason.

Erik Portillo gets two shutouts between the pipes

The goalie pipeline for the Kings is very strong regarding the talent and depth between the pipes for the young netminders in the system this year. Top Kings' goalie prospects Erik Portillo and Carter George will compete for more looks from the coaching staff and the front office for LA in training camp this fall.

Portillo is ready to learn and develop more in training camp and the preseason for the Kings' front office. He debuted for the Kings this past season, making an appearance against the Anaheim Ducks for the Kings in 2024-25.

"We don't want to mess around with the back, and he was really good last year. He's a confident kid and he wants to learn. He's great with the goalie coaches. We just need to make sure his back is healthy and he's ready to go this year. He's training in Sweden and he's feeling good, and we're looking forward to getting him into camp."
Glen Murray on Erik Portillo

The Kings' director of player development Glen Murray said this summer that LA wants to be cautious with Portillo after he dealt with a recurring back injury this past year.

Kyle Burroughs makes a case to be in the top six defensemen

The seventh-defenseman role for the Kings will be a competition between Kyle Burroughs and former fourth-round draft pick Jacob Moverare. Burroughs is more physical and has more proven experience playing in the NHL in the regular season than Moverare, with Kyle having played over 100 games in the past two seasons in the Pacific Division with the Kings and the Sharks in San Jose.

Burroughs was picked up by LA from the Sharks this past regular season. With him going into the final year of his current contract, and him being a right-handed shot, I could see him making a strong argument to make a push onto the final roster for Hiller and the Kings going into opening night this upcoming season in the West.
