Why the New York Islanders role is better
One of the obvious selling points for the New York Islanders is something that just became a reality this week in they were the team to win the NHL Draft Lottery and now have the first overall pick. This is the first time since 2009 that the Islanders will have the first overall pick, which they used on John Tavares.
In this draft, they still have each of their draft picks in every round but also have two first round picks in next year's draft class. If their is a general manager candidate who believes in building through the draft, then the Islanders would be appealing.
The Islanders are also in a good spot in terms of the salary cap and will have more cap space than the LA Kings at just over $29 million to spend this offseason.
Another thing that makes the Islanders role more attractive, and something the Kings could not offer, would be offering the candidate both titles of general manager but also President of Hockey Operations. The Kings have Luc Robitaille as their President so if there was a candidate like Ken Holland that wanted both, the Islanders would be the only option.
