The Conn Smythe Trophy is described as the trophy that goes to "the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs." This typically goes to the best player in the playoffs for the team that won the Stanley Cup however this past year went to Connor McDavid although the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup.
This would be only the sixth time a player to win the trophy who did not win the Stanley Cup. For the Los Angeles Kings, they would have two players win the trophy and it occurred in the two seasons they would win the Stanley Cup.
LA Kings have had two players win the Conn Smythe Trophy
The first player in franchise history was Jonathan Quick, as he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy in the 2011-12 playoffs. He would play in 20 games during their playoff run and go 16-4 with a save percentage of .946% and had three shutouts. In the Stanley Cup round against the New Jersey Devils, he would allow only seven total goals as the Kings would win the seven-game series in six games.
The last player to win the award was Justin Williams, who played seven seasons with the LA Kings and was on the roster for both Stanley Cup victories. During that second Stanley Cup run, Williams was exceptional with nine goals and 16 assists with a league-leading +/- of +13.
In the Stanley Cup round against the New York Rangers, Williams had two goals and five assists in those five games, including the game winner in Game 1 of the series. In Game 2, a game the Kings won 5-4 in overtime, Williams didn't have any goals but had assists on three of the five goals by Los Angeles.
It was an impressive run by Justin Williams in the playoffs for a player who never had more than 22 goals in a regular season in his seven seasons with the Kings.
