Even if the chances of the Edmonton Oilers trading hotly-debated superstar Connor McDavid are next to zero, the very idea of him leaving their franchise this upcoming season brings up a very polarizing debate and discussion in various social media and fan circles around the NHL.

The Los Angeles Kings named as a hypothetical big market Western Conference trade destination for Connor McDavid from the Oilers

There have been some hypothetical trade ideas tossed around this offseason in the summer involving the Los Angeles Kings trying to make a trade deal for McDavid from the Oilers this upcoming season and before the deadline possibly. I do want to say that there aren’t any concrete rumors or reports that actually indicate McDavid having interest in joining the Kings via a trade deal this upcoming season.

It is interesting to discuss how much it would take for the Kings to send to Edmonton to get a superstar and generational talent like McDavid from the Oilers this upcoming season.

McDavid has said he wants to win in Edmonton and it still is likely that he signs a contract extension to stay with the Oilers more for a long-term deal going into the future with that franchise.

The fact that the Kings would have to trade so much in terms of future first-round picks in the draft and valuable key pieces on the roster for this upcoming season to hypothetically get McDavid from the Oilers. Would McDavid want to come to LA in a big market with a good roster projected for the upcoming season, is also a question that is important for this scenario, hypothetically for LA and new general manager Ken Holland with the Kings.

The idea of the Kings trading for McDavid would give LA the elite goal scorer and top-line forward playmaker that the franchise has been looking for with the coaching staff and front office since last offseason this past year in 2024.

The Hockey Writers named the Kings as one of four “potential destinations” for McDavid if he did leave Edmonton this upcoming season in the West. Two other large market potential landing spots for franchises around the league joined LA on this piece from The Hockey Writers, including the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
