The Stanley Cup Playoffs hockey returned for the Los Angeles Kings and interim head coach DJ Smith in a solid effort on the ice and on the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon (April 19) in the playoffs in the postseason in the West against the Colorado Avalanche in the Mile High City.

Big fight and good performance from goalie Anton Forsberg defensively in the crease in the net helps the Los Angeles Kings stay competitive in Game 1 against the Avalanche this past weekend on Sunday

Colorado did look like the better team on the ice offensively and on both ends of the ice in the opening frame in the first period early in the game yesterday in the West. The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard in the middle frame in the second period.

But the Kings didn't go away quietly, making it difficult for the Avalanche to put them away on the ice or on the scoreboard in the middle frame in the second period and in the final frame in the third period. The Kings missed some opportunities defensively in the zone for defensemen Drew Doughty and Cody Ceci in the final frame in the third period.

While the Avs scored multiple goals on the scoreboard in the middle frame in the second period and in the final frame yesterday on the ice, the Kings wouldn't go away late in the game in the final frame in clutch time. The Kings scored the game's first goal on the scoreboard for LA in the final frame in the third period in clutch time, with a floater from Artemi Panarin getting past Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood late in the game to cut the Colorado lead to just one goal by a score of 2-1.

An untimely and undisciplined penalty taken by forward Joel Armia late in the game in the final frame in the third period would result in the Kings missing an opportunity with the empty net late in the game in clutch time in the postseason this spring.

Here are the takeaways from the Kings' third-period late push loss in Game 1 in the opening-round playoff series this postseason in the West on the road vs. the Avalanche, by a score of 2-1 on the scoreboard, on April 19.
