Moving up 13 spots in the first round in this reimagining of the 2007 draft, the Sharks pick winger Max Pacioretty at ninth overall in the lottery.
Even though the Sharks don't get to pick their future captain and a franchise-defining player in Couture just inside the top 10, at No. 9 overall, San Jose still gets a pretty solid forward in Pacioretty. The longtime Montreal Canadiens and Vegas Golden Knights forward, Pacioretty is one of just five wingers from this draft class who scored over 300 career goals and 600 total points.
Had injuries not limited his opportunities to get more consistent ice time in the prime years of his career in the NHL, Pacioretty easily could've amassed over 800 career points and played in over 1,000 regular season games.
Instead of picking Keaton Ellerby to round out the top 10 in this redoing of the 2007 draft lottery in the first round, the Florida Panthers select another defenseman, Kevin Shattenkirk, at 10th overall. Shattenkirk leads all defensemen from the 2007 draft class in career points and assists.
Ellerby was the only defenseman picked in the top 10 who registered under 50 total points and played fewer than 300 career regular season games in the NHL.
One of the bigger steals for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2007 draft, center Alex Killorn moves up 66 spots to go 11th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes in this reimagining of this draft class in the first round. Killorn is one of four centers from this draft class who has played over 1,000 career games and scored over 500 total points.
Killorn has also won multiple Stanley Cups with the Lightning in his NHL career.
While Sutter was a quality two-way center for the Hurricanes, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Vancouver Canucks for over a dozen years in the NHL, Carolina still gets someone who played over 1,000 career regular season games in Killorn at 11th overall.
