Originally going 230th overall in the seventh round to the Nashville Predators, winger Patric Hornqvist moves up into the first round to go 10th overall to the Vancouver Canucks. Hornqvist had a good career in the NHL, playing over 900 career regular season games and winning two Stanley Cups with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
The Canucks originally picked defenseman Luc Bourdon at No. 10 overall inside the top 10 in the 2005 draft. Bourdon was the only player picked in the top 10 in the 2005 draft in the first round who didn't play 100 career games in the league in the NHL.
Instead of going 35th overall to the Sharks in the second round of the 2005 draft, Vlasic slides up into the first round to go to the Pacific Division rival Kings 11th overall. Vlasic was the only defenseman who played over 1,300 career regular season games from the 2005 draft class.
The idea of a career Sharks defenseman like Vlasic playing with the Kings in the Pacific Division is an odd thought.
In this hypothetical reimagining of the 2005 draft in the first round, we have the Rangers going with their original No. 12 overall pick, defenseman Marc Staal. This was a pretty strong draft class defensively, and Staal brought good versatility and stability to his game on the blue line.
Staal is one of five defensemen from the 2005 draft class who played over 1,000 career games and scored over 200 career points in the league.
