Re-drafting the 2004 NHL Draft lottery

A top-heavy draft among Russian forwards, the 2004 NHL Entry Draft class was highlighted by two all-time great goal and point scorers.

Winger Drew Stafford was originally picked 13th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2004 draft lottery in the first round. In this hypothetical reimagining of the 2004 draft lottery, we have the Sabres sticking with their original pick with Stafford at No. 13 overall just inside the top 15. He had a long career in the NHL, and he helped the Sabres in Buffalo on three playoff runs in the 2000s and the early 2010s.

Stafford had three 20-goal seasons and one 30-goal season for the Sabres in the nearly decade-long career he spent in Buffalo in the 2000s and 2010s decades. He ranks seventh in goals scored (196) and in the top 15 in career regular season points (428) and games played (841) in this draft class from 2004.

This isn't the perfect replacement for Dubnyk, but Anton Khudobin did have a good career at his best in the NHL in the 2010s and 2020s decades with the Bruins, Dallas Stars, and the Hurricanes in Carolina. Khudobin was originally picked 206th overall in the seventh round by the Wild in the 2004 draft.

Dallas fans will remember when Khudobin helped lead the Stars to the Stanley Cup Finals during the Covid bubble postseason in 2020. He posted a .917 save percentage and one shutout in the 2020 postseason for the Stars, including 14 wins.

While the Oilers don't get Dubnyk at 14th overall in the 2004 draft lottery in the first round, Edmonton does pick a pretty solid long-term goalie option in Khudobin in this reimagining of the 2004 draft.
