Drew Doughty, D

Among the biggest storylines for the Kings going into the upcoming 2026-27 season is the impending contract situation surrounding franchise defenseman and veteran 36-year-old Drew Doughty.

While Doughty is still under contract for the upcoming season, discussions about his future with the organization could become one of the most important storylines facing the Kings this summer.

It sounds like this contract situation for Doughty going into this upcoming season already is looming large on Holland's mind early this summer.

"We have talked once, actually I texted him and we’re going to meet again next week. I’m open to, let’s see. I want to talk to him and see what he’s thinking. I know what I’m thinking. And I’m comfortable going either way."

Doughty's situation is different from the others on this list because there is less urgency. However, the importance of the decision cannot be overstated given his place in franchise history.

It's not unusual for Kings' top franchise players to retire wearing the Los Angeles uniform in this past couple of decades or so. Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, and Luc Robitaille all retired as Kings' at the end of their careers in the league.

Because of Doughty's status within the organization, it would not be surprising to see extension discussions become a major storyline later this summer.
