Los Angeles Kings give a sneak peek at their penalty kill pairings this season
The Los Angeles Kings had another round of practices on Sunday and one noticeable thing was the team working a bit more on their penalty kill. Jim Hiller was asked about this after practice and it was noted in the question that there were four forward pairs and seven defensemen in the rotation.
The Kings head coach said the team doesn't expect to be that deep come the regular season, but it was a chance to look at the group as a whole.
"Usually they are running six penalty kill forwards and four defensemen," Hiller said. "We know based on depth and different circumstances and injuries, we wanted to get just get everybody you know that we thought would be involved in that."
Breaking down the pairings during the Los Angeles Kings' practice
Jesse Cohen was able to share the pairings in the tweet below after practice on Sunday.
The top pairing shouldn't be much of a surprise with Adrian Kempe and Anze Kopitar followed by Phillip Danault (who is actually 24 and not 25 and noted by Cohen in a follow-up tweet) and Trevor Moore. After those two pairs were Quinton Byfield with Warren Foegele and finally Akil Thomas and Trevor Lewis.
Last season, the Kings were one of the best in penalty kill at 84.58%, which was the second best percentage. However, as Hiller noted today teams are judged by their last game and for the Kings they were not good in that department.
In the first-round playoff matchup with the Edmonton Oilers, they allowed nine power-play goals and five in the final three games. Hopefully, some of the changes made for this season will have a positive impact on their special teams.
