Jonathan Quick surprisingly low on this list of recent goalies in NHL
Recently, Bleacher Report put out their list of Top 10 goalies since 2000 and it wasn't a matter of if but where former Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick would be on this list. However, his name surprisingly popped up rather quickly as he was ranked only the eighth-best goalie during this period.
The article noted that the factors they considered the most were wins, championships, and leaguewide-awards. Based on this, there isn't much discussion at the top of this list as Martin Brodeur and Marc-Andre Fleury were number one and two respectively.
At number three was Roberto Luongo, which is another good ranking for the production and the case can be made that Luongo was better than Quick. However, starting at number four, which was Andrei Vasilevskiy, is where Quick could start making a pretty good argument to be ranked there.
Why should Los Angeles Kings' goalie Jonathan Quick be ranked higher?
The opening sentence for Quick states his case pretty well for him being ranked higher:
It's been a career of multiple chapters for the Connecticut-born Jonathan Quick, who was a third-round pick of the Kings in 2005, debuted in 2007-08 and was hoisting both the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy by the end of the 2011-12 season.
In the first four seasons of his NHL career, Quick had already won the top team award and the top individual award for goalies. However, he would go on and win another Stanley Cup two seasons later and then a third as a member of the Las Vegas Golden Knights (but didn't play in those playoffs).
If the factors that contributed to this list included awards and championships, it doesn't make sense for a goalie like Connor Hellebuyck to be ranked ahead of Quick, as he has neither of those to this point in his career.
The next goalie is Henrik Lundqvist, another great goalie, who doesn't have any Stanley Cups and won the Vezina Trophy once. It is tough to make the case he should be ranked ahead of Quick.
It is surprising to see a goalie like Jonathan Quick, who is arguably one of the best big-game goalies of recent memory, to be this low on a list like this.
