The Los Angeles Kings general manager provided an update on contract negotiations for two of their key players in Adrian Kempe and Anze Kopitar. In regards to Kopitar, Holland said that they would be taking it one year at a time and not looking to sign an extension before this season.
A few days after that, Mayor's Manor confirmed that Kopitar would not sign an extension but also said that this would be his final season and indicating he will retire after the season. If that does happen, it has been an incredible career for the former first-round pick as Kopitar has helped the Kings win their only two Stanley Cups in franchise history.
Over 20 seasons, Kopitar has claimed a number of franchise records, including games played, assists, and game-winning goals. However, there is one record that he has not claimed yet but could do so at some point in this final season.
Anze Kopitar should have his sights set on most career points in LA Kings history
The one record that is realistically within reach is most career points as he is currently second in franchise history with 1,278. The current record holder is Marcel Dionne with 1,307 so Kopitar is only 29 points behind him.
As long as Kopitar doesn't miss any time, this is a record that he should be able to claim in the first half of the season. The past four seasons he has had at least 67 points each season and has never had a season with fewer than 50 points.
The fact that he has never had less than 50 points in a 19 season career just speaks to his durability and consistency. It is one of the reasons that Kopitar is going to go down as one of the greatest players in franchise history.
