Kings ditched Forum Blue and Gold for silver and black—and fans never got over it

Looking back, it might have been one of the biggest mis-steps by the Los Angeles Kings.

For close to 40 years now, the Los Angeles Kings have been known for the silver and black, but that wasn't always the case. In fact, for the first 30 years the franchise was in the NHL, they had a very different color scheme as they would go with the Forum Blue and Gold.

However, the summer of 1988 was a transformative time for the Kings as they would make one of the biggest trades in NHL history when they would get a deal done with the Edmonton Oilers that included the greatest hockey player in the league, Wayne Gretzky.

It was clear at the time of the switch what the LA Kings were trying to do, and that was to align themselves with the popular football team in the city at the time, which was the Raiders. While the Rams were also in Los Angeles at the time, the Raiders had a much more passionate fan base that the Kings tried to attract by using a similar color scheme of the Silver and Black.

LA Kings had more success with the Black and Silver, but the Forum Blue and Gold would be a better fit now

Since the Kings made the color switch, there is no denying that they have had more success with the Black and Silver. They would win their first, and only, division title in 1990-91 and go on to win two Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014.

However, the Raiders did not stay in Los Angeles much longer after the Kings made the switch, as they would return to Oakland in 1995. Now with teams like the Rams and, of course, the Lakers in Los Angeles, if they had stayed with the Forum Blue and Gold, it would have aligned more with some of the teams still in the city.

The Kings have enough history with the Black and Silver that they don't need to revert to their original color scheme, and it is probably better to be used on special occasions if they want to go that route. Whatever choice they make is fine as long as they don't bring back the Burger King jerseys.
