It's do or die. The Los Angeles Kings head back to Edmonton for game six and are in need of a win to keep their season alive.
Look Back at Game Five:
Game five was not pretty. The Kings were dominated throughout, eventually dropping the game only to a score of 3-1 thanks to Darcy Kuemper keeping them in it for as long as possible.
Andrei Kuzmenko scored LA's only goal of the night, redirecting an Anze Kopitar point shot on the powerplay, giving LA a 1-0 lead. The Kings lead did not last long, as Evander Kane tied the game shortly after, beating Darcy Kuemper glove-side just as a penalty to Drew Doughty concluded. Mattias Janmark would strike just over halfway through period three, giving Edmonton a 2-1 lead with the eventual game-winning goal. Edmonton would later add an empty net goal within the final minute after LA pulled Darcy Kuemper for the extra attacker.
Kuemper overall stopped 43 of 45, including all 19 shots faced in the 1st period. Calvin Pickard was far less busy, stopping 21 of 22 shots in the win.
Key Point Against the Edmonton Oilers for Game Six:
1. Win.
That's it. There's no magic stat or matchup to look at. The only thing LA can do is look within themselves, with the only importance being the result after 60 or more minutes of hockey.
The Kings have what it takes within that room. We saw that in the first two games and the first two periods of games three and four. This same exact roster scored the most goals and allowed the fewest from March 7th through the end of the regular season. This is a good team. This should be an angry and desperate team, and they spoke like they would be after the Game 5 defeat.
Joel Edmundson said how frustrated the team was with that performance, referencing how LA felt like they had good energy but just could not put it together. Postgame, head coach Jim Hiller said, "We can't look to one part of our game and think that was acceptable or good enough."
I have mentioned it before within these write-ups before, but these are only words. You can say what you want, but at the end of the day, if the Kings want to keep their season alive, they have to back them up. No better time to get your first road win of the postseason then tonight.
Lineup Notes:
Alex Turcotte and Jordan Spence both returned to the lineup, with Trevor Lewis and Jacob Moverare coming out. Lineup changes have occurred within the bottom six in every game this series, so it would not shock me to see more.
