Los Angeles Kings' 2024 second round draft pick nets uncommon goal
The Los Angeles Kings were off on Thursday night but the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League had a game against the Peterborough Petes. The Kings were certainly paying attention to that game as their second round pick from this past NHL Draft, Carter George, was going to be in net.
He had a good game as he saved 36 of 37 shots and the Attack would go on to win 4-1. However, George was able to help his own cause late in the game with the final goal of the night on an empty net.
George was drafted in the second round with the 57th pick and was the third goalie taken behind Ilya Nabokov, who was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche, and Mikhail Yegorov, by the New Jersey Devils. While George is slightly smaller than the typical NHL goalie, he certainly makes up for it with his athleticism in the crease.
This season, George has appeared in 15 games for the Attack with a record of 4-7-2-2 with a goals against average of 3.23 and a save percentage of .908. The record doesn't look great but the Attack haven't been great this season and George has done a good job keeping them in games with four games already with 40 or more saves.
Los Angeles Kings have never had a goalie score a goal in an NHL game
While they are somewhat rare for goalies to score a goal, it does happen on occassion as there has already been a goalie who scored a goal this season. Filip Gustavsson for the Minnesota Wild scored one against the Boston Bruins on October 15th.
However, for the Los Angeles Kings it has never happened in their franchise history. Maybe once Carter George is up with the Kings, he will be able to make franchise history and be the first goalie to accomplish this.
