LA Kings make confusing move with defenseman on waivers

Despite not having a fully healthy roster to fill out with active players this fall, the LA Kings placed defenseman Kyle Burroughs on waivers on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Kings have been busy on the waiver wire early this regular season this fall, sending multiple defensive players and goalies through waivers to the AHL affiliate Ontario Reign. Early this weekend on Saturday, the Kings placed defenseman Kyle Burroughs on waivers

Other teams around the NHL have the opportunity to pick up Kyle Burroughs from the Los Angeles Kings on waivers on Saturday

Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday morning (Nov. 1) that the Kings had placed Burroughs on waivers this weekend.

This move comes roughly one month after the Kings put Burroughs on injured reserve after he suffered an upper-body injury this fall in the preseason. Burroughs suffered an upper-body injury on a blocked shot in the preseason on Sep. 30 against the Utah Mammoth. He played five games in the preseason for the Kings earlier this fall.

It doesn't sound like the Kings are getting forward Warren Foegele back in the lineup anytime soon, after he suffered an injury in the Kings win over the Chicago Blackhawks this past weekend in late October.

What's so confusing about this move by the Kings is that Ken Holland and Hiller didn't necessarily have to put Burroughs on waivers. The Kings don't have a full 23-man roster that is healthy and active in place early this regular season.

Burroughs is the only Kings' defenseman outside of the top six core group on the blue line this season who has an extensive and proven experience playing for multiple teams in the league in the NHL. He's played over 200 career regular season games in the Western Conference (since the 2020-21 season).

This means that the Kings are likely keeping fellow defenseman Jacob Moverare on the active roster with the team this fall. Moverare played his first game of this regular season late this week on Thursday (Oct. 30) against the Detroit Red Wings at Crypto Arena.

I think this also means that the Kings are going to call up someone from the Reign in the AHL sometime soon. The Kings could bring up a forward from the AHL, like Akil Thomas or Andre Lee. Or the Kings could call up a defenseman like Angus Booth.

If Burroughs clears waivers, he'll be eligible to join the Kings' AHL affiliate in Ontario in early November this week. He played 33 games for the Kings this past regular season in the 2024-25 campaign, registering three assists and three total points for LA.
