The news that took headlines in the hockey world in the league this past week now appears to be involving the Los Angeles Kings in the West in the Pacific Division. The headlines that stole the national spotlight in the league in the NHL in this past week saw the Toronto Maple Leafs hire former Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka to be their new general manager in the East.
Earlier this past week, the Maple Leafs hired Chayka as the new general manager in the East and franchise legend Mats Sundin to help lead the hockey operations department.
Frank Seravalli reported on May 4 that the Maple Leafs in Toronto have been connected to targeting the Kings' senior director of hockey operations and former Coyotes executive Jake Goldberg. Speculation and various reports have pegged Goldberg as a candidate to potentially join Chayka's staff in the front office in Toronto this upcoming offseason in the summer.
Goldberg has past ties to Chayka from their time together in the front office with the Coyotes in Phoenix, AZ, in the 2010s decade. Chayka was the Coyotes' general manager from 2016-2020. And Goldberg was the director of hockey operations for the Coyotes in Arizona from 2017-2019.
In the 2020s decade, Goldberg has served as the Kings' senior director of hockey operations for this past five years.
This news comes as the league was reportedly looking into allegations of tampering with the Toronto Maple Leafs in this past few months. The Kings and the Utah Mammoth were reportedly the two franchises that were making a stink about the allegations and concerns surrounding tampering with Chayka and the Maple Leafs.
"Much of the league speculation over the weekend centered on a possible reunion between Chayka and former Coyotes employee Jake Goldberg, now the Los Angeles Kings’ senior director of hockey operations. There was also speculation Chayka intended to pursue Chase Glasberg, Utah’s manager of salary cap and hockey strategy. Glasberg is the son of Neil Glasberg, the agent for coaches and front office executives, who helped the Maple Leafs execute the search that landed on Chayka."Frank Seravalli
The league has ruled the tampering claims to be unsubstantiated after the investigation in this past couple of weeks.
