Near the end of this regular season in the West in the Pacific Division, the Los Angeles Kings are still fighting for positioning in the standings in the postseason for this upcoming spring in this next few weeks on the ice.
Are the Los Angeles Kings a viable rumored trade option for Auston Matthews from the Toronto Maple Leafs this upcoming summer?
But the Kings and new general manager Ken Holland in the front office have also been in the midst of a rampant rumor in various social media discussions and in the media this past few weeks on the trade block concerning Toronto Maple Leafs superstar forward Auston Matthews.
Howard Berger in the Toronto media market recently sparked some debate and discussion on social media with the rumor and report that he posted earlier this week that Matthews is going to "be traded this summer" by the Maple Leafs' front office.
He said that Matthews "will be traded" to a few different teams in the Western Conference this upcoming summer in the 2026 offseason, including the Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and/or Utah Mammoth. Berger also said that Matthews "won't be back next season" for the Maple Leafs in the East.
While this speculation hasn't been backed up by many other reports or concrete rumors in the media this past couple of weeks concerning the Kings and Matthews on the trade block, it has certainly brought up a lot of debate and discussion on social media recently around the league in the NHL.
The Maple Leafs haven't had a successful regular season in the East in the Atlantic Division on the ice or in the standings this past few months. Toronto doesn't have all the superstars in the active roster lineup that they did in this past season in the 2024-25 campaign in the East, including Mitch Marner and Matthews offensively.
Toronto needs more young talent and depth in the active roster lineup offensively to make a playoff push in the East this upcoming season in the 2026-27 campaign.
I'm not saying that the Kings and Holland in the front office are in a great spot this regular season in the West in the Pacific Division. That said, if the Kings are able to pull off a trade on the block this upcoming summer in the 2026 offseason in this upcoming few months in the West to get Matthews, there should be no hesitation for the front office to make that move for the team.
The main hold up relating to a trade on the trade block this upcoming summer in the 2026 offseason between the Kings and Maple Leafs for Matthews offensively in the active roster lineup would be the assets that LA could make available on potential negotiations in this upcoming few months in the East.
I think the Kings would have to give up most or all of their top young players in the active roster lineup, including defenseman Brandt Clarke and center Quinton Byfield (and maybe even prospect defenseman Henry Brzustewicz) to get the Maple Leafs potentially interested in discussions on the trade block for Matthews in the East this upcoming summer in the league.
If I had to guess, the Kings getting another top-line center in the active roster lineup would be via another player option in free agency or on the trade block this upcoming summer in the 2026 offseason, not Matthews from the Maple Leafs in Toronto.
