The Los Angeles Kings were very busy on the first day of free agency and would sign five players but probably weren't the players many expected or hoped. The big-name free agents like Brock Boeser would return to Vancouver, while Vladislav Gavrikov left Los Angeles for New York.
The focus for Ken Holland was clearly on adding depth to the roster, and he certainly achieved that with the additions of defensemen Cody Ceci and Brian Dumoulin, forwards Joel Armia and Corey Perry, and goaltender Anton Forsberg. In total, those five players account for $15.25 million of the cap space the Kings had available going into the start of free agency.
How much cap space do the Los Angeles Kings have left?
According to Puckpedia, the Los Angeles Kings had just under $6 million in cap space, which in theory would be enough to sign another free agent. However, prior to the moves made in free agency, the Kings extended a qualifying offer to Alex Laferriere.
The Kings' young forward is going to need a new contract and one that probably will take up a majority of that salary cap. In theory, what is left over the Kings could certainly sign another player or two but it would make more sense for them to save some of that cap space for during the season, especially if there is a trade to be made towards the deadline.
Another option the Kings could take is trading a player or two to open up more cap space. There is no question that a player like Trevor Moore could help with a cap hit over $4 million but that creates another hole in the roster. The Kings may not really see any actual savings, depending on who they signed to replace him.
It was a busy start for Ken Holland and the Los Angeles Kings and at this point they have probably made all the moves they will in free agency.
