If there was one position that wasn't a pressing need for the Los Angeles Kings to address in the 2025 NHL Draft, it was certainly at goalie. The Kings have done an excellent job over the past few years with picks like Carter George and Hampton Slukynsky.
However, that doesn't mean if there is value that the Kings should ignore the position completely and that seems to be the case here with this pick of Petteri Rimpinen. He looks like a big-game goalie and saves his best performances for those moments, and this past year has played in 29 playoff or tournament games and has a save percentage well over .900%.
NHL teams can never have too many good goalies and it appears the LA Kings just added another one.
The LA Kings seemed to go with the safer prospects in this draft class, and Jan Chovan certainly falls into that category. This is not to say this is a bad pick, but rather finding players with low risk at this point of the draft certainly increases the chances of them making an impact at the NHL level.
Chovan is a forward who spent most of last year in the U20 SM-sarja and finished with 11 goals and 12 assists in 39 games. He also was an alternate caption for the Slovakia U18 team and in seven games had five goals and three assists.
The scouting report for Choven on The Hockey Writers describes a player with a high hockey sense, and he uses that to his advantage to make up for some of the areas where he may not be as strong.
