Erik Portillo picked up his first win in his first NHL start as the Kings defeated the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 2-1.
1st Period
Portillo was sharp in net for LA, turning away all nine Ducks shots he faced as the opening frame finished up scoreless. The teams traded powerplays about halfway through the period, coming up empty on their man advantages.
2nd Period
Anaheim grabbed the lead early into the 2nd period as Ryan Strome put home a rebound in front off of a Drew Helleson shot for his 5th of the season. If there was one aspect to Portillo's play yesterday that was not the most sharp, it was a handful of large rebounds given up, and Anaheim capitalized on this one.
LA would even things up around the ten-minute mark as Alex Turcotte beat Ducks goaltender John Gibson's blocker. LA's opportunity came from a turnover by Trevor Zegras, who threw a puck toward the middle that landed on Alex Laferriere's stick, leading to a Kings 2-on-1.
3rd Period
Alex Laferriere broke the tie just 1:18 into the 3rd period, collecting a puck in the slot and putting it past John Gibson. The goal came after Phillip Danault drove wide on an Anaheim defenseman and threw a puck to the net, allowing for Laferriere to beat his man to the cage and convert on the rebound. The rest of the 3rd period chances belonged to Anaheim, but they could not solve Erik Portillo and the Kings defense, with LA holding on for a 2-1 victory.
