Former Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell is calling it a career after nine seasons in the NHL this offseason.
Campbell announced his retirement from professional hockey via a post on his Instagram page on Monday. Along with the retirement announcement on social media on Monday, he included this message in his Instagram post.
"Walking away from hockey wasn't easy. It gave me more than I could have ever imagined. But over the last few years, I realized the work that brought me the most fulfillment wasn't stopping pucks-it was helping people become who they're capable of becoming. Jack Campbell revitalized his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings
The last time Campbell appeared in the NHL was with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2023-24 season. He spent the following campaign with the Detroit Red Wings organization, making appearances in 14 games for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins but never seeing NHL action in the Motor City.
Campbell's career began with the Dallas Stars in the 2013-14 season, where he made one start in a 6-3 loss vs. the Anaheim Ducks in October 2013. The Stars selected Campbell 11th overall in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
He didn't get a consistent opportunity to prove himself at the NHL level in goal until he was traded from Dallas to the Kings in 2016. Campbell had a big run with the Kings after an injury to franchise icon and starting goalie Jonathan Quick in the 2018-19 season, where he registered a .928 save percentage, 2.30 goals against average, and two shutouts, in 31 appearances and 25 starts.
Following a struggling period for Campbell where he couldn't consistently establish himself at the NHL level after being selected in the first round in 2010, his time in Los Angeles effectively revived his career and gave him an opportunity to prove he belonged in the league.
Campbell was a very consistent and reliable backup who gave the Kings stability in net behind Quick.
Campbell's performance for the Kings in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons got the attention of the Maple Leafs amid the 2020 season. After he registered a save percentage well over .900 and a sub-2.75 goals against average in the two full seasons he served as a backup goalie for the Kings, Campbell was traded from Los Angeles to Toronto.
He had his best seasons in Toronto in the early 2020s, including an NHL All-Star Game appearance in 2022 representing the Maple Leafs. Campbell's success with Toronto ultimately led to the Oilers signing him to a five-year contract in free agency in the summer of 2022.
Campbell struggled to consistently replicate the success he found in Los Angeles and Toronto after signing with Edmonton. He was eventually bought out of his contract by the Oilers in the 2024 offseason.
Following the announcement of his retirement early this week, Campbell said he's making the move to a new chapter in his life as an identity and performance coach with a company he tagged in the IG post, called Novus Global.
