The Los Angeles Kings (5-3-4) and Jim Hiller faced former head coach Todd McLellan and the Detroit Red Wings (8-3-0) for the first time this regular season this fall on Thursday night (Oct. 30). A combination of discipline issues and controversial calls and video reviews from the referees and Toronto contributed to the Kings only picking up one point last night vs. Detroit at Crypto Arena.
Late-game goals from Quinton Byfield and Corey Perry get the Los Angeles Kings one point vs. the Detroit Red Wings
The Kings fought all the way back with a really impressive and wild two-goal rally late in the third period in clutch time. Corey Perry scored his fourth goal in six games with the Kings this fall to pull the Kings within one goal on the scoreboard in the third period.
Less than a minute and a half later, Quinton Byfield got the Kings tied up on the scoreboard for the first time since the second period vs. Detroit yesterday night. Byfield's goal got the game into overtime for the Kings.
A few minutes into overtime, it looked like the Kings had won the game on a power play goal on special teams from Kevin Fiala. But the goal was called back on a goalie interference call after Toronto reviewed it. The Kings eventually lost in a shootout by a score of 4-3 to the Red Wings last night.
Perry and Byfield spoke to the media after the tough shootout loss to the Red Wings last night in the locker room at Crypto Arena.
Byfield and Perry helped the Kings pull off that crazy late third period comeback yesterday against the Red Wings, scoring two incredibly clutch goals in the span of under 90 seconds in the final frame.
Here's a look at everything Byfield and Perry said to the media postgame following the Kings' wild 4-3 shootout loss to the Red Wings at home at Crypto Arena on Oct. 30.
Corey Perry
On thoughts and takeaways from the loss to Detroit last night
"Two points would have been ideal, I thought we had it, but those things happen. It’s a crapshoot when you go into a shootout. We battled. It’s not easy coming back, your first game at home after being on the road for five, so I thought we battled hard right until the end."
On the Kings rallying late in the third period to tie the game vs. Detroit
"It shows there’s a confidence on the bench in knowing, under three minutes, and we still have a chance. There were some fortunate bounces."
On scoring four goals in six games for the Kings
"I just play my style of hockey. It's just who I am. I go out there, I play, and we'll see what happens."
On the Kings needing to play full 60-minute games
"It’s there, but it’s there in spurts. When we do it, we look really good doing it. Now, it’s just a matter of finding it, sticking with it and doing it for a full 60 minutes. I know it’s a cliché, but the things that we do work and when we get away from it, things go sideways."
Quinton Byfield
On the Kings scoring on the 6-on-5
"I think we're able to just recover the puck. We were getting them to the net. Parrs just standing there, jamming away a couple of times. We were hungry there."
On the missed scoring chances for the Kings vs. Detroit last night
"I feel like we did have a lot of chances. There's a few that we like back, but it was good that we're getting more chances and we're trending the right way."
On the impact Corey Perry had on the team in the past six games
"His leadership you know he's he's won a cup. He's done a lot of things in his career, and I think leadership's key, but he's always talking, always staying engaged in the game. He's one of the guys who always goes to the net. That's where all his goals are from. So it's a lot to learn from. After practice, he's always working on that. So there's a lot just looking at him and seeing his preparation for the power play."
On the Kings' struggles on the power play
"I feel like we had some chances. We're moving around. We still have a lot of confidence in our power play group, and we're going to figure that out. I feel like we moved it around well. Once you get everything clicking, everything goes a little smoother. So, once we got one, I feel like we will start flowing."
On the Kings needing to play more complete 60-minute games
"I feel like our first period was good. I feel like we played pretty good throughout the whole game. There's been a lot of games where it's been maybe not our best periods, and we still come out with a point here and there. That's saying a lot that when we're not at our best, we can still muster up points. But you obviously want two. So it definitely sucks, but once we fully find our game, get in the right mojo, it's going to be real good."
On the Kings playing with 11 forwards vs. Detroit
"Yeah, it was good. Good for the forwards and me, not the D. There's a lot more ice up there. Guys are more engaged. Everyone's getting involved. Doing a lot last year, we felt good with it."
