The Los Angeles Kings (5-3-4) and head coach Jim Hiller played a seventh overtime game early this regular season on Thursday night (Oct. 30) against the Detroit Red Wings (8-3-0) and former head coach Todd McLellan. The Kings rallied back from being down 3-1 on the scoreboard late in the third period in clutch time yesterday.
Jim Hiller and the Los Angeles Kings come out on the wrong side of a couple of video reviews in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Red Wings
Thanks to goals from forwards Corey Perry and Quinton Byfield, the Kings came all the way back to tie the game up in the span of under a minute late in the final frame against Detroit. Hiller and the Kings looked like they would come away with a pretty incredible two points in the standings yesterday after Kevin Fiala scored a goal in overtime on the power play.
But the Fiala goal was called back after a video review from Toronto due to goalie interference. The Red Wings took advantage and won the game in a shootout after what was the game-winning goal by Fiala was called back by video review for goalie interference.
Hiller gave his thoughts on the video reviews, takeaways from the game, and more with the media yesterday after the loss to the Red Wings.
The Kings had to battle back again last night, overcoming some of the issues on special teams on the penalty kill to eek out a point in the standings vs. Detroit in the West.
Here's a look at everything Hiller said to the media postgame following the Kings' controversial 4-3 shootout loss to the Red Wings at Crypto Arena on Oct. 30.
Jim Hiller
On the Kings rallying back to get one point in the standings yesterday vs. Detroit
"I mean, good point, but wanted two, right? We'll take any point we can get, but it's disappointing we didn't get two."
On two video reviews going against the Kings
"The league looked at both of them. Detroit didn’t have to challenge. They decided that they were both [against us], there’s not much we can do."
On the Kings battling back in the 6-on-5 late in the game with the empty net
"We had traffic, and we were able to get the puck there. Kopi won a couple of big draws, that’s always an important part of that. People at the net, Perrs at the net, and that’s how you score goals. We executed that well, but it’s too bad we had to be in that situation. We’ll take the point and just really disappointed we didn’t get the second one."
On the production the Kings have gotten from Corey Perry early this regular season
"I’d be lying to you if I said I expected him to have this many already. We knew playing against him long enough that he’s effective, he’s a goal scorer. I said it a couple times, it just ends up on his stick somehow. Some guys, it just ends up on their stick. That was Perrs there. He spends the time there, he takes a beating to do it, but yeah, what an addition to our team."
On his thoughts from the Kings' 5-on-5 play
"Detroit’s playing pretty well, they’re a good team. I think, if we track the chances at 5-on-5, probably close to our season high, I would think, enough to win for sure. So, we liked lots about our game. I thought our 5-on-5, after the Chicago and San Jose games, we didn’t generate much of anything in the offensive zone. Big difference tonight. We forechecked better, we got pucks, I think Eddie had six shots from the blueline, so stuff like that."
On the special teams costing the Kings again last night
" It’s very frustrating. I mean, I guess the encouraging part is you can see where the issue lies. That’s pretty clear for us, where the issue lies. Our penalty kill got rolling there a little bit, and then now we take a hit again tonight. Power play, I thought, was pretty good. I mean, we probably had 7,8,9 chances on a power play tonight, I know Kevin [had chances] and then he breaks a stick, so one of those has just got to go. That’s just really, in the end, comes down to the difference in the game. They had, I think, maybe three or four chances on the power play and scored two goals."
