Get an understanding of the NHL landscape

Another thing that Ken Holland said during his press conference that he plans to do is speak with all the general managers across the league. This is smart as it helps begin some potential trade discussions but also might help get some insight on what players could be free agents in July.

While there are a number of players set to be free agents, they don't always get there and can sign contract extensions between now and then. For the Kings, this could be valuable information so they don't waste time on players who might stay with their current team.

Another reason this is valuable is that this can start to set the table for trade discussions, for the NHL Draft but also potentially if the Kings look to move some of their own players. Ken Holland can start to get an understanding of who to call over the next few weeks and what they might be looking for.
