If the Kings wanted to bring in another low-risk free agent signing to add depth and fill a need on the roster lineup before training camp and the preseason this fall, it probably makes the most sense to add another body on the blue line.
The Kings are mostly filled up on the roster with the forward group late this summer in the projected lineup. Holland and the Kings have wanted to shake things up on the blue line this offseason to get better results from the defensemen moving the puck in transition and producing more on special teams on the power play.
Journeyman defenseman Mike Reilly could give the Kings a proven veteran on the blue line who can potentially fill a depth role and shake things up with this position group entering training camp next month.
Reilly was a contributor in a depth role on the blue line on a Carolina Hurricanes squad that won the Stanley Cup this spring. That could be valuable winning experience that Reilly could bring to the locker room for the Kings going into this upcoming season, hypothetically.
Unlike the other defensemen on this list among the potential free agent signings for the Kings late this summer and going into training camp and the preseason this fall, Reilly gives the Kings an experienced depth option who can move the puck reliably up the ice in transition. And he would give the team another left shot on the blue line if they decided to sign him hypothetically going into training camp this fall.
With Reilly, the question isn't whether the Kings would need to guarantee him a roster spot on the blue line in training camp. It would be whether it makes sense to bring him in a low-cost and low-risk contract this fall to fill a depth role on the blue line.
