Versatile forward Alex Laferriere was a workhorse for the Kings last season, playing all 82 games in the regular season while playing over 1,500 minutes for the first time in his NHL career. No Kings player had more scoring chances and shots on goal this past season than Laferriere.
On the surface, scoring 20 goals for the first time in his NHL career looks like a successful offensive season for Laferriere. His underlying stats suggest he could have produced even more. No Kings player generated more individual scoring chances or shots on goal than Laferriere, while he also led the team in individual high-danger scoring chances.
He was the only Kings player to surpass 200 individual scoring chances this past regular season. Per Money Puck, Laferriere had 24.3 expected goals this past season, meaning his 21 actual goals left him over three goals below expected.
While his individual scoring chances and high-danger scoring chances both rose, so did Laferriere's shooting percentage. He registered a shooting percentage in the double digits for the first time in his NHL career this past season (at 10 percent). It also helped that Laferriere got more opportunities on special teams on the power play for the Kings, playing a career-high of over 138 minutes on the power play this past season.
