Tonight's game started slowly on the scoreboard for the Los Angeles Kings and head coach Jim Hiller against the Detroit Red Wings to kick off a four-game homestand at Crypto.com Arena late this week on Oct. 30. It took until later in the second period for either team to break the 0-0 tie on the scoreboard on the power play on special teams for the Red Wings.
The Los Angeles Kings rally late in the third period to get Detroit Red Wings to the shootout before falling 4-3
The Kings came out in the first period with good energy on both ends of the ice tonight against the Wings. In the game's first period, the Kings had double-digit shots on goal and multiple high-danger scoring chances. This was one of the better offensive-zone efforts the Kings had, getting the puck on net on that end of the ice in the opening period.
When it looked like the Kings were taking momentum in this game on the penalty kill in the second period on a goal by Alex Laferriere, it didn't take the Red Wings long to respond on the scoreboard.

Discipline issues cost the Kings late in the second period, leading to the Red Wings evening up the game on the scoreboard literally just seconds after Laferriere gave LA the lead shorthanded on special teams.
On a controversial play, the Red Wings got their first lead of the game in the middle frame on a goal by Marco Kasper that looked like it could be overturned by a high stick. Kasper's goal was upheld after a short review from Toronto.
The Kings knocked on the door of tying up the game in the third period and late in the second. In the second period's final five minutes and the first 10 minutes of the final period, the Kings registered 20 shots on goal and over a half dozen scoring chances.
Late in the third period, the Red Wings got a more comfortable lead on the scoreboard on Detroit's second goal from Kasper on an odd-man rush allowed by the Kings.

The Kings pulled off a crazy rally late in the game in the third period to score two quick goals from Corey Perry and Quinton Byfield to tie things up on the scoreboard for the first time since the second period.

Perry continued to be clutch for the Kings tonight, scoring his fourth goal of the season in just six games played for LA. Byfield also registered a big multi-point night for the Kings to help send this game to overtime and get LA one point in the standings.

It looked like the Kings had the game won in overtime on a goal by Kevin Fiala. But the goal was called by due to goalie interference after the review from Toronto.
The Red Wings prevailed in the shootout on a goal by Lucas Raymond to get the 4-3 win over the Kings.
Here are three takeaways from the Kings' controversial 4-3 shootout loss vs. Detroit at home at Crypto Arena on Oct. 30.
Darcy Kuemper steady in net for the Kings
Darcy Kuemper gives the Kings a chance to win every game in net this fall, early in the regular season. The Kings are getting amazing goaltending lately from Kuemper and Anton Forsberg as the backup. At 5-on-5 play, Kuemper shut out the Red Wings in this game.
But I thought this was one of Kuemper's more well-rounded starts early this regular season. He kept the Kings in this game with a fighting chance in the second and third periods tonight. The shootout didn't go his way, but I thought he was good enough to give the Kings a chance to win this game.
Kuemper and the Kings had to face down over a dozen high-danger scoring chances from the Red Wings tonight (per Natural Stat Trick).
Perry and Byfield nearly got the Kings close to the win, but they fell just short in the shootout.
Penalty kill woes continue to haunt the Kings
Special teams have been a big issue for the Kings in the past few weeks, early this regular season. The Kings allowed two goals on special teams on the penalty kill tonight. And the Kings were 0-for-3 on the power play in the offensive zone vs. Detroit.
Each of the Red Wings' first two goals in the middle frame in the second period were scored on the power play against the Kings in the defensive zone. The Kings became the first team in the Western Conference tonight to cross 50 power play opportunities against.
Had it not been for those two untimely penalties the Kings took in the second period late, the momentum might have stuck with LA through the start of the third period tonight.
Winless on home ice... thanks to controversial calls from Toronto and the refs
At this point, it almost feels like the Kings are cursed on home ice this fall. Despite having a couple of great opportunities to pick up their first win on home ice this season, the Kings haven't been able to get on the right side of the win column yet at Crypto Arena in the past few weeks.
The Kings are 0-2-2 on home ice at Crypto Arena early this regular season. Closing out games on home ice has been an issue for the Kings this fall at Crypto Arena in the past few weeks.
In the past couple of weeks, the Kings have lost two games on home ice where they led on the scoreboard at one point in the contest.
