3 possible free agent signings the LA Kings were smart to avoid

Ken Holland improved the Kings' roster this summer without taking on several expensive contracts that may not have fit the team's long-term plans.

The Kings went into free agency looking to add a top-six playmaker to the forward group, which they accomplished by signing former Minnesota Wild veteran winger Mats Zuccarello.

Mason Marchment is a quality power forward capable of producing 20-30 goal seasons offensively. He found a spark offensively down the stretch this past regular season after being traded from the Seattle Kraken, scoring 15 goals and 32 total points in 39 games played with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Spending the amount of money it took for the Sharks to sign Marchment would be better used for the Kings to address other roster needs, namely at the center position.

Rather than spending over $7 million annually on a winger like Marchment, Holland and the Kings were able to sign the veteran winger Zuccarello for just $1 million in base value for one year this offseason.

Knowing the existing wing depth the Kings have and the more pressing needs at center and defense, allocating significant cap space to another winger wasn't the most efficient use of resources this offseason.
