In this past few weeks, Los Angeles Kings general manager Ken Holland made it clear that now-former interim head coach DJ Smith would be a candidate this offseason on the coaching carousel.

However, the Kings are still expected to evaluate multiple candidates as the franchise searches for a coach capable of helping the team move beyond repeated first-round playoff exits in this past few years in the 2020s decade.

The Kings need to make the right coaching hire if the organization hopes to finally move beyond repeated postseason disappointment. Holland faces a lot of pressure to help position the franchise as a legitimate contender in the Western Conference going into the future.

The next head coach may also play an important role in helping maximize a roster that still needs improvement in several key areas.

Here are three of the most realistic coaching candidates Los Angeles could pursue this offseason.

DJ Smith (former LA Kings interim head coach)

If the Kings and Holland feel that Smith deserves a legitimate shot over a full season, LA could give him a contract extension to take the interim tag off and officially make him the next full-time head coach. Smith also brings prior NHL head coaching experience after spending several seasons behind the bench with the Ottawa Senators.

His familiarity with the roster and existing systems could appeal to an organization looking to maintain continuity after another playoff appearance.

Smith played an integral role in helping to lead the Kings to the postseason in the West this spring.
After replacing Jim Hiller behind the bench earlier in the season, Smith helped stabilize the team and provided the Kings with renewed energy late in the regular season.

Smith’s familiarity with the roster could appeal to the organization internally, but the hire may not generate overwhelming excitement among the fanbase.
