Mikael Backlund could also emerge as an intriguing veteran trade target for the Kings this offseason.
Backlund has previously expressed a desire to finish his career in Calgary, something that could complicate any potential trade discussions. However, if the Flames fully commit to a long-term rebuild, the veteran center could still emerge as a realistic option for teams seeking experienced two-way depth down the middle.
It sounds like Backlund wants to be in Calgary for the rest of his career in the league if it was solely up to him this offseason. If the Flames are going all-in on the rebuild this offseason, then it could make Backlund a more viable trade target for a team that needs proven veteran two-way center depth in the middle of the lineup, like the Kings.
Backlund has built a reputation as one of the league’s more reliable defensive centers over the past decade, while also bringing extensive experience within the Pacific Division. Few veteran centers are as proven and consistent on the defensive side of the ice in the zone as Backlund in this past decade.
His structured two-way style could also fit well in playoff hockey, where defensive discipline and matchup play often become even more important.
As a veteran presence at the center position, Backlund could also help ease some of the defensive burden on younger centers such as Quinton Byfield by continuing to handle difficult defensive-zone assignments and matchup responsibilities.
Backlund could still provide meaningful secondary offense as well, recording at least 15 goals in each of the past four seasons with Calgary. He may not be a long-term solution at center, but he could provide important short-term stability while the Kings continue to develop younger options internally.
