Drew Doughty, D
The physical and ultra-competitive brand of hockey that longtime Kings defenseman Drew Doughty has played, along with the trash-talker image he's been branded with throughout his career, has earned him the monikor of a pest for many opposing teams and players.
Doughty is a smart player who knows different ways to get in opponents' heads to gain a competitive edge on the ice for him and his team. He's not only a smart player on the ice, but he also knows how to use his wit and humor to get under the skin of opposing players.
Doughty said in 2019, after he was named one of the NHL's best trash talkers, that knowing what to do and when is an important way to gain a competitive edge on the ice.
"Most of the trash-talk from me, anyway, is just calling out guys for messing up on plays, a play I saw on highlights or a play that happened in the current game. I’m just trying to get in their head, make them feel bad about themselves kind of for a second to try to gain an advantage."Drew Doughty
The only player who ranked as a better trash talker in the league in that 2019 poll was then Boston Bruins' forward Brad Marchand. And anytime the only player you're ranked behind on a list of trash talkers in the NHL is Marchand, you know that you're good at getting under people's skin on the ice.
