The NHL awards season is right around the corner, and the fans get a say with awards of their own. Two LA Kings are in the running for Fan Choice Awards.

The NHL traditionally has selected writers vote each year for its awards such as the Hart, Vezina, Norris, etc. In 2019, the league created the NHL Fan Choice Awards to vote for unique awards categories as well. This year, two current LA Kings and one former King are nominated for awards in three categories.

“The 2021 NHL Fan Choice Awards celebrate the best of the best of hockey social media” is the official description of the event. It has fifteen different awards the fans can vote for, with ones you would expect like Goal of the Year and Save of the Year.

There are some off-the-wall categories, such as King of Quarantine, Locker Room Legend, and Most Interesting Man. The Best Mic’d Up Player is surprisingly missing Drew Doughty, whose chirps and candor have become the stuff of legend.

Even still, two LA Kings are nominated for NHL Fan Choice Awards. The first is Adrian Kempe, who is up for the Best Dressed award. Kempe is competing with 30 other players for the award.

Next is LA Kings goaltender Cal Petersen. Petersen is in the running for the Best Goalie Mask award. His competition includes Braden Holtby of the Vancouver Canucks, Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, and the mask of the NHL’s newest franchise, the Seattle Kraken.

The Petersen was selected for was his gold and forum blue reverse retro mask.

Although he now plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, former LA King backup goaltender Jack Campbell is on the ballot for Best Cat (well, actually his cat is, but get the drift). Joining Campbell’s cat are the feline friends of Mikhail Sergachev, Nazem Kadri, and Nick Suzuki.

Voting for the 2021 NHL Fan Choice Awards ends on June 14th. To make your choices, click this link.
