Trade #1: LA Kings get Casey DeSmith and a 2022 second-round pick for Jonathan Quick and Johan Sodergran.

Think of the Roberto Luongo trade back to the Florida Panthers in March 2014. Florida received a 34-year-old veteran goalie along with a developing prospect in exchange for some goalie named Jacob Markstrom and former second-round pick Shawn Matthias.

In this particular trade, I have the Penguins also receiving their Steven Anthony in the Luongo trade in Johan Sodergran – a 21-year-old winger who tallied 7 points in 48 AHL games last season. He’s up with the Reign again this season but largely overshadowed by the LA Kings’ top prospects.

In exchange, the Kings get 29-year-old Casey DeSmith, who was linked to the Quick deal in The Athletic‘s trade topic, and a 2022 second-round pick. The Penguins are without a first, third, fourth, and sixth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, so any draft capital would likely come from 2022.

DeSmith would be the backup to Petersen, posting a 2.84 GAA and .885 SV% in six games this season. Last year with the Penguins AHL affiliate, DeSmith registered a 2.92 GAA and .905 SV% in 41 games. It’s worth noting; he’s under contract through the 2021-2022 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent, which could align well with the development of Jacob Ingham, Lukas Parik, and other LA Kings goalie prospects.
