Amidst Manhattan Beach sunshine, perfect SoCal weather, and summer vacations, the Los Angeles Kings have been up to things this off-season. The 2015 NHL Draft has come and gone with the Kings making the biggest splash. Free agency signings have sent players to unexpected new territory, while some are still sitting and waiting for phone calls from interested teams.
Let’s recap the different transactions for the Kings this summer…
- Acquiring Milan Lucic from the Boston Bruins
On June 26th, the Kings acquired Milan Lucic in exchange for Martin Jones (G), Colin Miller (D), and the 13th overall draft pick in the 2015 draft. A week later, the Bruins shipped off Martin Jones to San Jose where he’ll take on the challenge of being a #1 goalie. As much as us Kings fans can’t stand the San Jose Sharks, it’ll be nice to see more of him in the Western Conference…plus, he now lives in the same city as me so I’m still his fan.
2. Jamie McBain re-signs to a 1 year contract
He’s a good depth guy so getting him for such an inexpensive price will pay dividends this year…especially because they haven’t really secured that RD to back-up Doughty just yet.
3. Justin Williams signs with the Caps
Sad. So sad. But we all knew it would come to this. “Mr. Game 7” found more $$$ on the East Coast by signing a 2-year deal with the Washington Capitals. The Capitals look like they’re gonna make a big push for the cup this coming year by adding him in addition to TJ Oshie.
4. Jarrett Stoll???
Have fun with your community service, champ? Is it mean for me leave it at that?
5. Mike Richards & waivers, contract ended, questionable decisions
There’s no definitive evidence out there just yet, but come on Mike? Really? Was it your goal to throw away your career by being caught with some OxyContin crossing the border? Is this how you want to end it all? All of us Kings fans have been fighting for you to get it together, but it seems you’ve lost hope as have we.
6. Slava Voynov pleads to misdemeanor
I think we’re all ready for the drama around this guy to end. On July 2nd, Slava Voynov pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of corporal injury to a spouse. He’s in for some jail time, community service, counseling, and questionable citizenship status. Throw in an achilles injury and you’ve got a great Wikipedia description of the artist formerly known as Slava Voynov.
7. Jhonas Enroth signs a 1 year deal
On to some good news! The Kings signed career back-up goalie, Jhonas Enroth, to a 1-year deal worth $1.25 million. He’s a good, steady back-up who will do well in the limited amount of time he’ll see because of workhorse, Jonathan Quick. Let’s all knock on a ton of wood to make sure Quicky doesn’t get hurt this year!
8. Andrej Sekera signs with Edmonton
Boy, did this guy cash in big (6 years for $33 million). The fact that Edmonton signed him to such a long-term and lucrative deal shows how desperate they are to solidify the backend. What’s all the hype with Sekera anyways? Apparently there is enough hype for him to be paid more than Niklas Kronwall, Jay Bouwmeester, Ryan McDonagh, and Kevin Shattenkirk. #fail
The notable transactions have been stated. Let’s see what happens with the qualifying offers to restricted free agents, Andreoff, Crescenzi, Dowd, LoVerde, Shore, and Weal. This coming season will be a great season to be a Kings fan!
