Los Angeles Kings defensemen Drew Doughty will wear “A” letter at the All-Star Game.

After being selected to represent the Kings in his first career All-Star game, Doughty has been chosen to wear an A on his sweater.  Doughty will be an assistant captain of Team Foligno.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno and Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews were named as captains to the two All-Star teams that will play in Columbus for the 2015 NHL All-Star game.  The two All-Star teams have taken on the names of their respective captains because the All-Star teams are picked in a fantasy draft format.

The fantasy draft will commence on Friday, January 23rd at 5:00 p.m. PST, and will be televised on NBCSN in the U.S.A. and TVA Sports in Canada.  Teams will be picked by Captain Foligno, and his respective assistant captains: Doughty, and Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane; and Captain Toews, and his respective assistant captains: Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, and New York Rangers forward Rick Nash.

When recently asked about drafting a team of All-Stars, Doughty said coolly, “I think I’m just going to draft guys that I think will be fun to be with off the ice.”  Doughty continued, showing off a bit of his Dewy personality, “I’m not trying to put the best hockey team together.  I’m trying to put the best team to have fun with in the dressing room around together.  I know a lot of guys that will be there, so I’m sure I’ll draft them.  But I’d like to meet some new guys too.  It would be nice to meet some new faces.

Doughty added, “Obviously I’ll get to [Kings teammate Anze Kopitar] at some point, so we’ll se how that goes.”

Captains and assistant captains were selected by NHL Hockey Operations after players were named NHL All-Stars.

Team Foligno will be the home team in the recently revealed black All-Star jerseys.  Team Toews is considered the away team and will wear the white uniforms.

Team Foligno will be coached by Kings head coach Darryl Sutter and the Kings coaching staff.  Team Toews will be coached by Nashville Predators head coach Peter Laviolette and the Predators coaching staff.

Doughty is currently tied for 5th among NHL defensemen with 24 assists, tied for 8th with 28 points, and second among all NHL players in time on the ice with an average of 29:17 per game.

In 44 games this season Doughty has 4 goals, 24 assists, 28 points, and a +2 plus/minus rating.

At this point, Doughty may be considered more than an All-Star.  It’s still very early, but Doughty is in the running for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the best defensemen in the NHL.

All-Star weekend starts Saturday, January 24th with the skills competition set to kick-off at 4:00 p.m. PST.  The All-Star game itself will be played on Sunday, January 25th at 2:00 p.m. PST.
