So as we all know, Ryan Smyth has been put on the Injured Reserve. When he was injured, no doubt the entire Kings collective held their breath, hoping that his injury would be short-lived, and that he’d be able to return quickly to his rightful place next to Kopitar on the 1st line. That line has been devastating to opposing teams, and is a primary reason that Kopitar leads the NHL in points. Unfortunately those hopes were dashed. Smyth is on the IR, and the Kings have brought up Andrei Loktionov to fill in. In actuality, Loktionov is going to skate with Frolov and Brown on the 2nd line, and Teddy Purcell will be given his chance with Williams and Kopitar.
I have to say, I appreciate the move to put Purcell on the 1st line. I’m not sure he’ll succeed there, although you better believe we’ll be hoping he does, but it’s a good move from Murray. In previous seasons, young players have been dumped on the 4th line with Ivanans and told to produce. I’ve got news for you, Kopitar would have a difficult time producing if he were playing with Ivanans. Don’t get me wrong, players need to earn the spot their given, but before we write Purcell and his offensive ability off entirely, it seems wise to give him a good, solid shot with players who can score. Now he has no excuses. If he can’t score with these two, he’s either not ready now, or he never will be. Either way, the Kings needs a new look this season. Regardless, I’m hoping he turns his season around and becomes a strong offensive addition to this team, but only time will tell.
