Few coaching candidates would generate more debate among Kings fans this offseason than Craig Berube. While Berube has proven experience as a head coach in the past, leading three different teams to the postseason in this past decade or so, he is also viewed as a risky fit for the Kings this summer.

Berube also brings extensive NHL coaching experience, including a Stanley Cup championship with the Blues.

Michael DeRosa of The Hockey News pitched the idea of Berube being a solid head coaching hire for the Kings potentially this offseason due to the younger core that Los Angeles is expected to transition to next season.

While the Kings likely want an experienced NHL coach behind the bench, I don't think that Berube would be the right long-term option for the franchise. The Kings had trouble getting out of the first round of the postseason for this past five years in the Western Conference.

While Berube’s Stanley Cup pedigree carries obvious appeal, Los Angeles may ultimately need a coach capable of elevating the team offensively rather than simply maintaining structure and physicality. After finishing near the bottom of the NHL in both power play and penalty kill efficiency, the Kings may prioritize a coach capable of implementing a more aggressive and creative system.

Los Angeles may need a coach capable of modernizing the offense and maximizing younger skill players rather than leaning too heavily into a defense-first system. The Kings are entering a transition toward a younger core, making player development and offensive creativity increasingly important moving forward.
