There wasn’t much happening for the Los Angeles Kings during the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft earlier today.
There were swaps of picks and even a few big trades that brought major talent to Southern California. But the Kings were involved in none of it. Instead they patiently waited and watched the other teams made moves and made their selections.
Then it was the Kings’ turn and with the 29th selection of the 2014 NHL Draft the Kings selected 17-year old Adrian Kempe of MODO in Sweden.

Kempe is a six-foot-one, 178-pound right wing that played in 45 games for MODO’s top club in the SHL last season. In international play Kempe registered seven points in seven games for Sweden during last year’s World Junior Championships.
Kempe has one year remaining on his contract with MODO and has said he plans on returning to the club for the remainder of the contract. Which shouldn’t surprise anyone, with his being only 17-years-old. He will likely need time to develop, and at his young age and playing in Sweden’s top league he should fill out fine.
A little fun fact about the newest member of the Kings, Kempe’s favorite NHL player is none other than Marian Gaborik. Should be a surreal moment for Kempe the first time he gets to lace up the skates in the same locker room as Gaborik.
