Los Angeles Kings @ Detroit Red Wings Preview

Previewing the Los Angeles Kings’ 2012-13 season:
Game 47 @ Detroit, April 24, 2013, 4:30pm PST (7:30pm EST)

The date was November 2, 1974. The Detroit Red Wings traveled the old Forum in Inglewood to take on the Los Angeles Kings where the home team won by a score of 5-1. What was significant about that night was that the Wings and Kings squared off for the first time ever as conference opponents. They would remain in the same conference for the next 40 years going through a lot of drama here and there along the way. Now, as these two clubs prepare for their meeting on Wednesday, they will realize that the conference rivalry will reach its conclusion as the Wings and Kings meet for the final time as conference opponents with Detroit moving to the Eastern Conferencenext season.

Sentimentality aside though, the Red Wings have bigger fish to fry. Having the longest playoff streak in the NHL with 21 consecutive postseason appearances, said streak is in jeopardy as the Wings currently sit one point out of eighth in the West and determined not to let that streak come to an end.

This is the third and final meetings between the Wings and Kings with each winning on home ice. This will be the first time the two clubs have met at Joe Louis Arena since February 10 when the Kings tied the game in the final minute of regulation only to surrender the game-winning goal with only four seconds left in regulation. But in all fairness, that was during Los Angeles’ early-season doldrums and have since become much better.

The last time these clubs met was at Staples Center on February 27 when the Kings, backed by Jonathan Bernier, scored twice in the third to defeat Detroit by a 2-1 score.

The Kings are definitely going to the playoffs and the Red Wings are simply looking to find a way in. This final conference meeting ever between Los Angeles and Detroit should prove to be an exciting matchup nonetheless.

Enjoy the game!
