It took until Los Angeles’ 26th game last season for him to notch his first goal. This season, Dustin Penner lit the lamp in his team’s 17th game although last night was just the big man’s 10ththis time around. While neither number is anything to write home about, Penner is getting back into a groove along with the rest of his team at just the right time.
While they have four-straight games, the Los Angeles Kings shouldn’t be in any position to rest easy. Sure, they’ve been turning it up as of late but despite the short season, there is still a long way to go. It’s time for everyone to be elevating their respective games and from what we’ve seen recently, that is just what Dustin Penner is doing.
He may only have a goal and two assists thus far but before the weekend, Penner just had a lone assist. It’s premature to analyze anyone’s value after just two games but if last night’s win against Anaheim was any indication, Penner’s is rediscovering his form slowly but surely.
He’s certainly not putting the numbers he did when he was with Edmonton but Penner’s 6’5, 245-pound is good for something. In his 10 games so far, the one they call “Pancakes” has dished out 23 hits, recorded 21 shots and has one more takeaway than giveaway (5 to 4). Plus, we all remember how he elevated his game with a vengeance in the playoffs so should the Kings get back into the postseason, the other teams should be extremely careful. But let’s not worry about that right now.
Last week, it was about Mike Richards and Justin Williams getting back into the swing of things, this week it’s Penner and hopefully someone new will rise to the occasion next week.
From flat to fluffy, Dustin Penner is starting to turn his game around. Let’s hope he can stick to it.
