In a harbinger of what is to come, the NHL has announced the cancellation of regular season games through January 14 due to the absence of a new collective bargaining agreement.
The constant iteration of regular season game canceling seems to just be delaying the inevitable and is contributing to even more fan outrage. In a recent interview, Bill Daly said that mid-January is the point of no return in terms of getting any kind of season underway. This is disheartening because that would seem to imply that the recent game cancellations may be the final stop on the lockout train.
This lockout hurts in more ways than one, and the NHL is severely harming its brand because of this process. The lockout of 2004-2005 was painful, but at least it was productive in introducing rule changes to speed up the game that actually brought the league back stronger than ever. That is not the case with the current labor dispute. Nothing good will come of this process, and the NHL is killing itself slowly.
What is going on with the world? Can’t we all just get along and get to compromising? While the NHL and NHLPA cannot find common ground on a new CBA, Obama’s Democrats and Boehner’s Republicans cannot come to an agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff. So goes the politics of money, greed and special interest only to screw over the [extra]ordinary people.
At least the Kings get to keep the cup for longer..
