The L.A. Kings minor league team, the Manchester Monarchs have had a rough start to the season. They have played fourteen games since Oct. 7th, nine of which they have lost. They are ranked third in the Atlantic Division with 11 points, behind the Providence Bruins (Boston Bruins Affiliate Team) and the St. John’s IceCaps (Winnipeg Jets” href=”http://jets.nhl.com/” target=”_blank”>Winnipeg Jets Affiliate). Russian born center, Andrei Loktionov, who has spent time playing with the Kings in the past, is ranked 14th in the AHL in points. Marc-Andre Cliche leads the team in goals and +/- with six goals, and a plus-7 rating.
Last season, the Monarchs finished 4th in the Eastern Conference with 98 points. Goaltender Martin Jones posted a record of 23-12-1, with 2.25 goals-against-average, a .924 save percentage, and 4 shutouts in 39 games during the 2010-2011 season. During the same season, goalie Jeff Zatkoff posted a 20-17-5 record with a 2.68 goals-against-average, a .911 save percentage, and three shutouts in 45 games. This season, the goaltending situation hasn’t been great as Jones is 4-6-0 and Zatkoff is 1-2-1. They are going to need more from their goaltenders if they want to climb up the rankings.
Defenseman Slava Voynov was reassigned to the Monarchs on October 29th after spending 5 games filling in for Kings’ D-Man Drew Doughty. With the Kings, he recorded 2 goals and an assist, zero penalty minutes, and a plus-3 rating. All points were recorded during one game against the Dallas Stars” href=”http://blackoutdallas.com/” target=”_blank”>Dallas Stars, where Voynov proved he is more than capable of competing at the NHL level. I’m sure the Kings will be seeing more of him in emergency situations.
The Monarchs have three games coming up this week as they play the Portland Pirates (Phoenix Coyotes” href=”http://howlinhockey.com/” target=”_blank”>Phoenix Coyotes Affiliate) on Wednesday, the Providence Bruins on Friday, and the Worcester Sharks on Saturday. Let’s hope they can turn things around and don’t forget you can watch all AHL games live by registering here. The Kings play the San Jose Sharks tonight at 7:30pm and the Nashville Predators tomorrow at the same time. Tune in to Fox Sports to catch it all live.
